HOLIDAY HAPPINESS: Book Review: Cemetery Boys by Heather Brewer

Title: The Cemetery Boys
Author: Heather Brewer
Publisher: Harper Collins
Release Date: March 10, 2015
Format Read: Hardback (FC)

Description from Goodreads: When Stephen is forced to move back to the nowhere town his father grew up in, he's already sure he's not going to like it. Spencer, Michigan, is like a town straight out of  a Hitchcock movie, with old-fashioned people who see things only in black-and-white. But things start looking up when Stephen meets the mysterious twins Cara and Devon. They're total punks-- hardly the kind of people Stephen's dad wants him hanging out with-- but they're a breath of fresh air in this backward town. The only problem is, Cara and Devon don't always get along, and as Stephen forms a friendship with the charismatic Devon and something more with the troubled Cara, he starts to feel like he's getting caught in the middle of a conflict he doesn't fully understand. And as Devon's group of friends, who hang out in a cemetery they call The Playground, get up to increasingly reckless activities to pass the summer days, Stephen worries he may be in over his head.

Stephen's fears prove well-founded when he learns of Spencer's dark past. It seems the poor factory town has a history of "bad times", and many of the town's oldest residents attribute the bad times to creatures right out of an urban legend. The legend goes that the only way the town will prosper again is if someone makes a sacrifice to these nightmarish creatures. And while Stephen isn't one to believe in old stories, it seems Devon and his gang might put a lot of faith in them. Maybe even enough to kill for them.

Now, Stephen has to decide what he believes, where his allegiances lie, and who will really be his friend in the end.

Being a big fan of THE CHRONICLES OF VLADIMIR TOD and THE SLAYER CHRONICLES, when Brewer released a new book, I had to have it. So I grabbed it at a bookfest and read it on the way home. It made for a slow, slow trip.

CEMETERY BOYS was too... bleh. There was a lot of cliche peer pressure, as well as the typical do-anything-to-fit-in element, and the way it combined into a mystery/thriller/almost-horror seemed fairy tale ish. I didn't feel that the story was meshed very well when it came to integrating the urban legend and everything that came with that, nor did I feel like the climax was much of a climax. In fact, I lost my intrigue about a third of the way through the book, but I read on in hopes that it would get better. In addition, the ending? I had dismissed the end-game "bad guy" at the beginning of the book, thinking it way too obvious, and when the big reveal came about, I felt like I'd been robbed of a good OMG moment. Also for me, I didn't like any of the characters.

What was probably the most important thing to me was that I read Brewer's books because I know they're going to be clean, and while this one wasn't filthy, it definitely crossed a line that Vlad and Joss (VLADIMIR TOD and SLAYER CHRONICLES) never did. This is something that really saddens me, as Brewer's books had always been a bit of a safe place for me when it came to reading-- I knew wouldn't ever come across something inappropriate in those books. Now, I can't say that anymore.

I would give CEMETERY BOYS one star, and I'm sad to say it, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Am I the only one that felt this way?

(Un)Happily,
Stephanie

Okay so as you guys know, I am a HUGE fan of Heather Brewer, and have been for several years. She's an incredible author, and a lovely person (I met her, if you recall, last February). Being totally honest here, that night was probably one of the best of my life so far. Now, Auntie Heather already has an amazing collection of books out (Look out below)

So I am more than pleased to announce that her new book, due for release in March of 2015, had it's beautiful cover reveal yesterday on Tea Time (Which I missed *Cries forever*) Without further ado, here it is. The highly anticipated CEMETERY BOYS:

Here's the description, courtesy of Goodreads
When Stephen is forced to move back to the nowhere town where his father grew up, he’s already sure he’s not going to like it. Spencer, Michigan, is like a town straight out of a Hitchcock movie, with old-fashioned people who see things only in black-and-white. But things start looking up when Stephen meets the mysterious twins Cara and Devon. They’re total punks–hardly the kind of people Stephen’s dad wants him hanging out with–but they’re a breath of fresh air in this backward town. The only problem is, Cara and Devon don’t always get along, and as Stephen forms a friendship with the charismatic Devon and something more with the troubled Cara, he starts to feel like he’s getting caught in the middle of a conflict he doesn’t fully understand. And as Devon’s group of friends, who hang out in a cemetery they call The Playground, get up to increasingly reckless activities to pass the summer days, Stephen worries he may be in over his head.

Stephen’s fears prove well-founded when he learns of Spencer’s dark past. It seems the poor factory town has a history of “bad times,” and many of the town’s oldest residents attribute the bad times to creatures right out of an urban legend. CAN YOU JUST FEEL MY EXCITEMENT?

YOU TOO SHOULD BE EXCITED, READERS!

Super stoked for CEMETERY BOYS because I know it's going to be amazing. All of Auntie Heather's books have taken over my life at some point or another, so I have some high expectations for this one, especially since she's so excited about it. More news on the way!

I was going to post links to her website, but it is currently under construction (Auntie's getting a new site, yay!) so I'll post a Twitter link and her Goodreads profile link instead. Sound good?

Book Review: Third Strike by Heather Brewer

I have been eagerly awaiting Third Strike, and finally it's here and I've finished it and... *sigh* It's review time.
Joss McMillan is in a pinch. Thanks to the family gathering going on at his house, he's forced to share the same space as his cousin Henry, who hates his guts for driving a stake through the chest of his Vampire best friend. Not to mention that since a Vamp killed his baby sister, Cecile, his mom and dad have been distant and unreachable. His Uncle had introduced him to the world of Slayers and Vampires, and took the time to train Joss so that he could excel as a Slayer. Now Joss has received a mission from the Slayer Society to hunt down the murderous vampires in his home town, without the help of his Slayer Family. The only connection he has with the Society is his friend Paty, but she's been instructed not to assist him in any way; only to collect his reports and get them back to the Society. To make things harder, Joss and Henry's parents decided that they should work out the bad blood between them, and have arranged for Henry to stay with Joss and his parents for the summer.. Now Joss has to Slay the Vamps AND watch out for the safety of his cousin, who won't let Joss go anywhere alone. All the while, Joss has those recurring nightmares about Cecile, with dark, bottomless eyes and vampire fangs coming from her beautiful, innocent face. It's a tough job, made even harder by the twists and turns of the plot.
If you've read my review on Second Chance, then you know that Heather Brewer is one of my favorite authors, and I've read all of her books from the vampire world. Well, this is the last book in the series, it's the conclusion book, and due to Auntie Heather's instructions, I read the acknowledgements. Thank you, Heather Brewer, for making me cry before the book even began.
All the secrets are revealed, all the questions answered, and though the biggest question of the series "Who killed Cecile?" Wasn't a shock to me, it may surprise you. I was surprised at the ending of the story, I mean, very surprised. Caught me so off guard, I wasn't expecting anything even close to that! But as for who killed Cecile, I had it pegged.
I give Third Strike five stars, because, as for conclusions go, it was perfect. It left you with a question at the end, but the best stories always leave the reader to truly decide how the story ends. I would recommend The Slayer Chronicles to anyone who like vampire stories, but I encourage you to read first the Chronicles of Vladimir Tod, which is the sister series to the Slayer Chronicles.

Book Review: Second Chance by Heather Brewer

I want to start this review off by doing something different: I want to rant and rave about Heather Brewer.
Years ago, I read The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod: Eighth Grade Bites, and I fell in love with that world. I read every book that was already available and eagerly awaited those that were yet to be released. I wanted to be a vampire so badly. And then when Twelfth Grade Kills came out, the perfect world I'd lived in for so long came to a close. I thought I'd never get to be a part of that world again.
But then the Slayer Chronicles came out, and I got to experience "Life from the other side of the stake" as the tag line goes. I remember when the second one came out, I was supposed to be spending time with my cousin, but there was no way I was taking my eyes from that book. I ended up spending her entire visit on the front porch swing, reading that book.
Heather Brewer is an incredible author. Her books aren't three inches thick, they aren't difficult reads, and there's nothing vulgar or sexual in any of the seven books based in Vlad's world. I haven't read any of her books from her other series, though I do own Legacy of Tril, so the above statement is solely taken from the one's I have read (Her other books may be the same way, but I haven't read them to tell you). The picture Heather paints with her words and the story line of her books is just incredible. She's so talented, and she's an author that actually cares about her fans (or Minions, as we're referred to).
That being said, with the last book in the Vampiric world I've come to love being released, I decided to reread the last book in the series, Second Chance, to refresh my memory.
Second Chance is book two in the Slayer Chronicles series, and it's all about Joss McMIlan, the invisible boy; the vampire slayer. Joss' sister Cecile, was murdered by vampires, right out from under his nose, and he'd been so scared that he'd done nothing to try and help her. He blames himself for not protecting her, and once his Uncle Abraham recruits him into the Slayer Society, he finds a way to get revenge and search for the monster who took his precious baby sister's life. After learning the trade in the first book, and taking an illegal, private job over the summer, Joss is called to Manhattan to help his Slayer family dispose of a fanged serial killer, but once he gets there, he discovers that the Society knows about the private job he took, and they doubt his loyalties. To prove himself, Joss has to take the lead for this job, making all the decisions for the team, taking the falls, and celebrating the successes. It's something he's never done- something he wasn't even sure how to do- but it's the only way to make everyone see that he could be trusted, so he accepts the position and takes on the challenge. As he searches for the killer, things are uncovered that make the task even more difficult than it already was, and when a strange being keeps showing up, giving Joss clues and hints, he starts to wonder who he can really rely on, and who's just playing with his head.
I loved the book just as much as I loved the other Chronicles books, and I wouldn't change a thing about them. If you're a vampire enthusiast, these are good books for you- it's not necessarily your typical Dracula type vampire, and the stories are set in our modern world. These are some of the best books I've read, and I have nothing bad to say about any of them.
If you haven't read any of Heather Brewer's books, I strongly suggest- no, I URGE you- to go out and pick up a copy of Eighth Grade Bites. Just look for the cover depicting a boy wearing a black hoodie with a Vampiric smiley face on the front. It's a great world to delve into.
